Renamo brigades promote awareness campaigns for the return of displaced persons

Several brigades linked to the Renamo party are involved in campaigns to raise awareness among the people of four districts in the central province of Zambézia, displaced due to military hostilities, to return to their areas of origin and resume their productive activities.
According to the Renamo political delegate in Zambézia, Abdala Ossifo, quoted by AIM, the sensitization targets the districts of Mopeia, Morrumbala, Dere and Gurúè.
Likewise, the Renamo political delegates in these same districts, who lived in hiding places, are returning to political work.
According to Ossifo, the return of Renamo district delegates to their activities is clear proof that the truce has come to stay.
President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama reached understandings that culminated in the suspension of hostilities for two months after a seven-day truce.
The present suspension of hostilities, which will last until 4 March this year, aims to create a favorable environment for "speeding up" the political dialogue, the aim of which is to achieve effective and lasting peace.
However, for a peaceful coexistence nationwide, Ossifo underlined the need for Mozambican society to "reform minds."
"From the top, we must begin to reform our minds. Because we are all brothers and we think that the truce benefits the entire Mozambican people. There are no military columns anymore and people travel from one point to another at will. This is good for all Mozambicans, because war does not solve anything, "said Ossifo.
The actions promoted in Zambézia are being replicated a little by all the provinces of the country that were the scene of acts of armed confrontation during the political-military tension, namely Sofala, Manica and Tete.
The first offensive was launched about two weeks ago in the province of Sofala at a meeting between a delegation of the largest opposition party and the government of that province. On the occasion, Renamo announced the resumption of political activities in all of the party's delegations at the Sofala level.
The Sofala government expressed its readiness to ensure that all political parties work safely, ensuring that "there is room for all"

Mozambique: Renamo Accused or Kidnap and Murder in Gorongosa

Maputo — The administrator of the central Mozambican district of Gorongosa, Manuel Jamaca, has accused the former rebel movement Renamo of kidnapping 16 people in recent weeks and dragging them off to Renamo bases in the Gorongosa bush.

Interviewed in Thursday's issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, Jamaca said that only three of these victims had returned alive, and the others are feared dead. He accused Renamo gunmen of murdering and abducting people linked to the ruling Frelimo Party, and turning this into a racket, demanding ransoms of 3,000 to 4,000 meticais (between 65 and 88 US dollars, at current exchange rates).

He added that if Renamo gunmen find anyone with a mobile phone on the slopes of the Gorongosa mountain range, they are tortured and accused of transmitting information to the government about the whereabouts of Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama. Jamaca believed that Dhlakama is constantly on the move between Gorongosa, Maringue and Cheringoma districts.

Bodies, believed to be those of victims of Renamo, are being found in these districts. The most recent case, Jamaca said, was two bullet-ridden bodies, in an advanced state of decomposition, found in the Kanda area of Gorongosa.

Police justify use of live amo against demonstration.

Maputo — The Mozambican police have justified the use of live ammunition against a demonstration in the town of Palmeiras, about 70 kilometres north of Maputo, last Friday. The demonstration was against the alleged complicity of the police with criminals. People in Palmeiras claimed that thieves and rapists are arrested, only to be seen back on the streets two or three days later. Such accusations are common in Mozambique and reflect lack of public awareness of the laws governing preventive detention. The police cannot hold suspected criminals in detention indefinitely, but must bring the suspect before a magistrate within 48 hours to validate the detention. Convinced that the police were bribed by criminals, Palmeiras residents staged a demonstration on Wednesday and threw up barricades of burning tyres on the main north-south highway, which runs through the town. The local police called for reinforcements from Maputo, and in the ensuing clashes one protector was shot dead.

Mozambique: Tete Government to Assess Situation of Refugees

Maputo — The government of the western Mozambican province of Tete plans to seed a team to Malawi in the next few days to assess the needs of more than 3,000 Mozambicans who have fled across the border to escape clashes between gunmen of the former rebel movement Renamo and the Mozambican defence and security forces.

According to the permanent secretary of the provincial government, Lina Portugal, cited by the Beira daily paper “Diario de Mocambique”, the delegation will include the Tete provincial director of immigration, and officials from Tsanano and Moatize districts, where the refugees come from.

“Within a matter of days, we shall send a team which will work with the Malawian government and with our colleagues in the Mozambican consulate, so that we can obtain real information in the accommodation centres, and question people to find out what they need, so that we can support them”, she said.

This survey, Portugal added, will also help the team ascertain why the refugees abandoned their homes, and whether the conditions exist for them to return to Mozambique.

“As a government, what we want is to gauge the reality on the ground, to see how we can intervene to support the refugees”, said Portugal.

Currently the refugees are living in three accommodation centres in southern Malawi, and are said to be desperately short of basic requirements for their survival.

Instability in Tsangano dates back to 2 April 2014, when Renamo gunmen ambushed a unit of the defence forces in Chibaene locality, when they were returning to the district capital after a patrol.

From Chibaene, the Renamo militia extended its action to Nkondezi locality in the neighbouring district of Moatize, setting up a military base in the area of Ndande.

1200 Rhinos killed in South Africa

Poaching of rhinos still active in South Africa, with almost 1,200 rhinos killed in 2015, indicated yesterday the South African authorities.

"By the end of December 2015, the number of rhinos killed by poachers was 1175",said the Minister of Environmental Affairs of South Africa, Edna Molewa, speaking to the media.

Despite representing a slight decrease compared to 2014, which saw killed 1,215 rhinos, the still high number of deaths is proof that this activity remains active and to respond to the high demand for ivory and rhino horn in illegal Asian markets, particularly China and Vietnam.

These products are sought after because of its alleged medicinal properties.

The rhinoceros horn keratin is a human nail component, and is sold in powder as alleged treatment for cancer and other diseases

36 foreigners arrested in Maputo

The Mozambican police announced on Monday the detention over the past week of 36 foreigners who attempted to enter the country via Maputo International Airport with forged entry visas. The group consisted of 16 Ethiopians, 11 Bangladeshis, four Pakistanis, three Nigerians and two Somalis. The group arrived on two scheduled flights, one of Kenya Airways and the other of Ethiopian Airlines. They will all be sent back to the cities they came from. The detection of false entry visas used by people travelling on these two airlines has become a regular occurrence at Maputo airport. Obviously some organized criminal outfit is selling forged visas to travelers, and those unsuspecting travellers are unaware that the equipment used by Mozambican immigration officials can detect false visas. Renamo SG shot in Beira city

The Secretary General of Renamo, Manuel Bissopo was shot  early this afternoon in Beira city and has been hospitalized in a private clinic in critical condition.

A family member who confirmed the information to Canalmoz said that Bissopo was inside his car in the company of his bodyguard who died at the scene riddled with bullets.

Bissopo was dealing with logistical issues of a rally at which Dhlakama would talk to people in Beira city's neighbourhood of Munhava today.

According to the Canalmoz report, today's gunshot attack against Bissopo, who is second man in the Renamo leadership, second only to Dhlakama himself, happens at a time when government (using the police) is practically banning Renamo's political activities in the capital of the country.

Mugabe alive and well, says his spokesman George Charamba

The Zimbabwean government has dismissed a false report by an
online publication, ZimEye,that President Mugabe collapsed and died while in thenFar East where he is on his annual leave.

The website published thenstory under the headline:“Rumour rips CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation) thatnMugabe has collapsed”. Presidential spokesperson andnpermanent secretary in the Zimbabwean Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Mr George Charamba said the false rumours about President Mugabe’s alleged death had become a usual chorus everyJanuary whenever he is on his annual leave which is heavily criticized by Zimbabwean opposition parties.

“You can doubt that there can be a New Year, but you cannot doubt that there will be a storybon the President’s alleged death every January,” he said. “This is the way the website seeks to improve its hits in order to get dirty money from Google.

There is a financial incentive to the grim lie. “Government is exploring
mechanisms for dealing with such extra territorial mischief.
These websites ride on carriers, don’t they?” Some people picked the hoax
that first appeared on the ZimEye website and started circulating it on social media. The ZimEye website that is known for fabricating stories, published the story under the pretext of a letter to the editor by one of their readers. Online media reports yesterday claimed that a South African radio station also picked up thebfalse story and ran it before retracting it and apologising.

Afonso Dhlakama reiterates that he will seize power in the north and center of the country in March.

Afonso Dhlakama the president of Renamo, the main opposition party in Mozambique, reiterated in an interview published today that as of March, his movement will rule through demonstrations in six provinces in the center and
north of the country.

"We will rule in March and no one in will prevent us. Finished is the game and we will no longer retreat. I swear by the soul of my mother," said Dhlakama, leader of Renamo (Mozambique National Resistance), in a telephone interview with the weekly Mozambique Channel(Canal de Mozambique) stating  that he was speaking from Gorongosa, in Sofala province, center of the country.

The leader of Renamo had threatened in early December to take power in the provinces where he claims victory in the general elections of 2014, in a
telephone interview, he said from Gorongosa, to social communication organs in Maputo. Questioned by the Mozambique Channel on how his party will form government in the six provinces, Afonso Dhlakama claimed that Renamo will use peaceful means, including demonstrations.

"Everything will be done peacefully, we need to make that clear, but we want to assure all Mozambicans that we will govern," emphasized Afonso Dhlakama. Dhlakama stressed that the militants and supporters of the main opposition party will defend themselves in case of use of force by the defense and security forces against demonstrations that the movement says it will take to seize power in the provinces concerned.

"I know that Frelimo (Liberation Front of Mozambique, the ruling party)
will send the young FADM (Armed Forces Defense of Mozambique) and the Rapid Intervention Police, we will defend ourselves," added the leader of the main  opposition party. The Renamo leader again rejected a possible meeting with the president, Filipe Nyusi, to resolve the current political crisis, accusing
the head of state and Frelimo of foreclosing all initiatives aimed at finding a way out of the impasse.

"It will be to negotiate what? They failed and ridiculed everything. Patience has its limits, they violated all agreements," said AfonsomDhlakama, still accusing the ruling party of the wanting to assasinate him.Renamo claims that the solution to the crisis goes through Renamo party rule in the six provinces that Renamo says it won in the general elections of 2014, the results considered of which it considers fraudulent, but saw two legislative proposals aimed at creating autonomous provinces in central and northern Mozambique voted against and rejected in parliament by the Frelimo majority last year.

A cessation of hostilities agreement signed in September 2014 between the
government and Renamo ended months of fighting in the center of the country, but there are still skirmishes between the defense and security forces and gunmen of the main opposition party.

Afonso Dhlakama's residence in Beira now surrounded by an army

More than 30 elements of riot police and Brigade of Special operations heavily armed. Noone passes through the four streets that delimite the residence of the lider of Renamo. There are reports of Renamo guards who have been arrested.Afonso Dhlakama came out of hiding from the Gorongosa bush yesterday. It is not yet clear why his house has been surrounded by heavily armed forces. One thing is clear though:Afonso Dhlakama wants peace, but the gorvenment is not so keen on yielding to the Democratic demands of this father of democracy who stands for the Mozambican people. In an interview with Journalists Gorongoza yesteday soon after he came out of hiding Afonso Dhlakama said that he is not afraid to die for his course as the spokesman for the Mozambican people.''If I give up the fight you will become slaves, more than slaves indeed.I want to tell you today that I,Afonso Dhlakama will never stop fighting for you'',he said to the cheering masses who had come to meet him in Gorongosa on his way to his residence in Beira.
The presdent of Renamo is supposed to meet with the presdent,Mr Filipe Nyussi to discuss matters of peace in Mozambique.Mozambicans are living in a period of great uncertainity since the contested elections of October last year.Renamo wants to rule in all the provinces of the country in which it won the elections. In short Renamo wants greater inclusion in the armed forces as well as in the gorvenment
in general.

Ambushed,Afonso Dhlakama

"I am a general and military, that was an ambush planned'',he said at a press conference. Afonso Dhlakama, president of Renamo,Mozambique's main opposition party was talking about the attack against him and his entourage that occurred on Saturday night in Manica province. "It was the Frelimo [Liberation Front of Mozambique] ", Dhlakama told reporters in Chimoio, capital of Manica more than four hours after the attack, which resulted in at least seven wounded, three from Renamo and four of the alleged attackers. The Renamo president established a relationship between the time of the attack and the fact that it had happened one kilometer kilometre after they had passed some law enforcement officials,''I am suggesting that it was these that gave the notice to the passage of the opposition party column''.At the press conference, Dhlakama said the dark night did not allow them to see clearly their attackers though the military of his party have assigned the ambush to authorship of the men of Unit of Rapid Intervention (UIR) and journalists have observed the wounded in uniforms of this Mozambican elite force. The president of Renamo also said of the incident ,"It is going to be like nothing has happened'',referring to the long standing dialogue with the government and that it could continue and that he did not fear death. He warned that the Frelimo implementation could turn against it itself."If I had caught the shots and died, you[reporters] would take part in a funeral and enter a worse rascal than Dhlakama'',he said.He also stressed that men from his party would have taken his leadership position. Relating to his attempted elimination by his opponents with "thought the communists of the 70s'',the political leader recalled that the first president of Renamo was shot down in 1979 and that "there appeared a Dhlakama more dangerous than the [André]Matsangaíssa''.He said that''this strategy is bad for Frelimo ", which considered him as someone who"negotiates, forgives and tolerates''.He said he could also''attack Frelimo in 24 hours, destroy everything, and make Frelimo lose all''.Dhlakama recalled that he had already been under attack previously, the last of which was in 2013 in Santungira, Gorongosa, and that it had not stopped him from negociating. " Dialogue will not stop. The long standing talks in Maputo are not just''for shaking hands'' with the President of the Republic to say that there is stability in Mozambique. As president of Renamo, availability to negotiate depends on talking about the future of Mozambique as Mozambican, about things concrete and not play with Frelimo". A car caravan that followed the Renamo president Afonso Dhlakama, was attacked at the start of Saturday night in the province of Manica, but the opposition leader was unhurt. The attack happened along the river Boamalanga, when Dhlakama's entourage was returning from a rally in Macossa and headed for Chimoio, capital of Manica. After the attack, and in the face of the threat of a second ambush, Afonso Dhlakama, who led personally split the guard. He ordered an escort of his caravan for the remaining 15 kilometers to Chimoio. Mozambique lives moments of political uncertainty, with Renamo leader not recognizing the results of the last general election and demanding governance in the provinces where he claims victory and threatening to seize power by force.
