The policemen in Mozambique will always ask you for a BI, bilhete or bilhete de identidade, which is your ID.If you dont have it,well, the corrupt ones will ask you for some cash, maybe a dollar (40meticais) or more. They do not care if you are Mozambican, they will ask you for the ID in the city...and if you happen to have forgoten one you pay,but of course the money is for their own pockets.I was stopped yesterday in the city of Tete.I told them I had forgoten my ID at home. They said,''Sir phone somebody to bring the ID here''.I said I couldn't do that because my home was 160km away.I also phoned my friend,Salvador and told him that I had been''arrested'' and that I hoped I was being taken to the police station. You see,the policemen were not pleased by my saying so,they took me aside and they tried to engage me into a suspicious conversation.I took out my phone and started googling.I clearly showed them that I was not interested in talks on the street, yet I showed them a lot of respect but they were not impressed at all.At that point my friend,Salvador, came along and he engaged into a lengthy, hushed conversation with them.I completely pretended to ignore them, but my ears were listening to everything they were saying...They needed some money from me."Buy us a drink'',they said.I made it known that I had money for the things I had budgeted for only.I told them to take me to the police station so that I could explain everything or maybe get charged,''You are an outlaw because you forgot you ID at home''.Finally they let us go.We did not say ''thank you boss''.I picked up my parcel and we left the scene. The two policemen went away without even looking back at us.I could not stop myself from laughing as I went away.
