Vilankulo, Inhambane - January 3, 2025

Tragedy struck in the waters of Macunhe, Vilankulo, in the northern part of Inhambane province, where two divers lost their lives to shark attacks while engaging in underwater fishing. The incidents, which have cast a somber shadow over the start of the new year, occurred on separate days, with the first attack noted in the last week of December 2024, and the second on this Friday morning, January 3, 2025.

The identities of the victims have not yet been officially confirmed, leaving the local community in mourning. Amido Alifo, who oversees the maritime sector in Vilankulo, confirmed the attacks to Miramar, stating that the bodies were recovered. The more recent victim was taken to the local hospital's morgue, while the first had already been buried by their family.

This is not the first time shark attacks have been reported in the area. Back in 2016, the Inhambane Bay witnessed a similar tragedy where three people were killed, and two others suffered serious injuries. These events underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for those who rely on the sea for their livelihood and leisure.

"Strengthening preventive measures is crucial to avoid more tragedies," Alifo urged, calling for increased awareness of the dangers of the sea and the implementation of more effective safety strategies. He suggested more frequent patrols, education on safe water behaviors, and even considering shark detection technologies.

The Vilankulo community, known for its beautiful beaches and aquatic activities, now ponders how to balance marine life with human safety. This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the ocean's power and unpredictability, where beauty and danger coexist.

As local authorities and the community begin to discuss ways to prevent future attacks, the families of the victims confront a period of mourning and healing. This incident might prompt a reevaluation of safety protocols and perhaps lead to significant changes in how diving and fishing activities are managed in shark-prone areas.

The local government has promised to look into the matter further, with an emphasis on public safety, while also encouraging residents and visitors to remain vigilant and informed about the risks associated with marine activities in Vilankulo.
