8 perish from lightning, drowning in Niassa

The fatalities took place in the course of the victims  crossing rivers or sheltering under trees in the Mandimba, Marrupa, Mavago and Mecula districts.


Maria Isabel Cavo,delegate of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction in Niassa, made this data public during an interview by Rádio Moçambique.


Given the situation and with the approach of tropical storm GAMANE, authorities is advising the people to remove goods from riverbanks ,  in the districts of Majune, Muembe, Sanga and Lago, where the Gamane is expected to strike with great  intensity.


The delegate of the National Institute of Meteorology, in Niassa, Tomás Inácio, advices the population to take precautionary and safety measures in the the face of of lightning strikes this is in direct contrast with what the local people believe in: that a person can be struck by lightning when dressed in red, or, as a consequence of the lightning being a product of bewitchment ( by a person).


Niassa: 42 Suspected cases of foot and mouth disease in cattle .

Cattle and other animals are prohibited  from entering or leaving the Mecanhelas region of Niassa, according to the local government.

It's feared that foot-and-mouth disease is proliferating in cattle, resulting in this concern.

According to the National Veterinary Directorate, there are at least 42 cattle in the town of Entre Lagos that show foot-and-mouth disease symptoms.

The presence of wounds and a lack of appetite in these animals, according to Ahmad Maulana, Director of Mecanhelas District Services for Economic Activities, suggests that they are indications of foot-and-mouth disease.

While this herd of cattle is being kept isolated, the source asserted that the disease-prevention efforts are ratcheting up. (RM)

Niassa: Peasants cautioned not to sow their seeds too early

In light of the predicted occurrence of the El Nio phenomena during the approaching rainy season, the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) in Niassa appealed to the local peasants not to plant the seed too soon.

According to INAM statistics, the province of Niassa  will experience normal rainfall from October to December, with a tendency toward below average rainfall, particularly in the northern region, and normal rainfall with an above normal trend from January to April 2023.

Tomás Inácio, the representative of the National Institute of Meteorology in Niassa, urges to the peasants to base their planting decisions on information from the sector in order to prevent seed deterioration in the  field.


Cholera kills two in Niassa.

Two people have died and a further ten are hospitalised following an outbreak of cholera in the district of Lago, Niassa province, northern Mozambique, health authorities announced yesterday.

The victims who died were transferred from the village of Ngofi to the treatment centre in Cóbue with acute diarrhoea and vomiting, chief doctor of Niassa province, Narciso Rondinho, is quoted by the daily Notícias as saying.

Without giving specific dates, Rondinho said that the treatment centre for diarrhoeal diseases in Cóbue administrative post was set up following the outbreak of cholera in the region.

Rondhino also said that at least 70 people had been admitted to the centre since the start of the outbreak, of whom 63 had been discharged.

Meanwhile, health authorities in Manica province, central Mozambique, have recorded one death thought to have been caused by cholera.

“Samples were taken and sent to Chimoio Provincial Hospital [for analysis],” said Moacite Ibo, head of public health in Manica.

Cholera causes severe but treatable diarrhoea, but can also cause death from dehydration in the absence of prompt treatment. It is usually caused by the ingestion of food and water contaminated as a result of inadequate sanitation.

Niassa Province experienses surge in tourists.




More than twenty-two thousand national and foreign tourists visited the province of Niassa in the first eight months of this year. 

This number represents an increase in relation to the more than thirteen thousand who visited this region in the same period last year.

 The data was presented this Tuesday in Lichinga by the director of the Niassa Governor's Office, Mauro Pius, at the end of the World Tourism Week. 

Mauro Pius said that the increase in the number of tourists is due to the slowdown in preventive measures against covid-19. In his words, tourists preferred the beaches of Lake Niassa, conservation areas and historical places. 

On the occasion, Mauro Pius reiterated that the province of Niassa has favorable conditions for the various forms of tourism. This year, World Tourism Week was celebrated under the motto “Thinking about Tourism

COVID: 48 Cases in A Week


Mozambique: Only 48 new Covid-19 cases in a week

The Mozambican health authorities reported on Tuesday a further seven new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease.

This brings the number of new cases diagnosed in the past week in the entire country to just 48.

According to a Tuesday press release from the Ministry of Health, that day’s new cases were four men and three women, all Mozambican citizens. They ranged in age from five to 61. There were two cases from Maputo city, two from Gaza, two from Sofala and one from Zambezia.

Since the start of the pandemic, 1,382,966 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 597 of them in the previous 24 hours. 590 of these tests yielded negative results, and the seven who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 230,076.

Two Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital on Tuesday, one in Maputo city and one in Niassa and four new cases were admitted, three in Niassa and one in Maputo. 

The number of patients undergoing medical care in the Covid-19 wards rose from eight on Monday to ten on Tuesday. Only one of these patients is still in intensive care, receiving supplementary oxygen.

The Ministry reported no deaths from Covid-19 on Tuesday, and so the death toll in Mozambique from the disease remains 2,220.

No recoveries from the disease were reported either, and thus the total number of recoveries remains 227,709, which is 98.97 per cent of all Covid-19 cases ever diagnosed in Mozambique.

The number of active cases of Covid-19 rose from 136 on Monday to 143 on Tuesday. The geographical breakdown of the active cases was as follows: Niassa, 32; Maputo city, 28; Zambezia, 20; Tete, 19; Sofala, 18; Gaza, seven; Nampula, six; Cabo Delgado, five; Manica, four; Maputo province, three; and Inhambane, one.

The Ministry press release also reported that a further 2,265 people were vaccinated against Covid-19 on Tuesday. The total number fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,681, 342, which is 96.5 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
