Malawi rejects joint exploration of lake Nyasa
Malawi has rejected the proposal of the African mediators on the joint exploitation of the resources of Lake Niassa with neighboring Tanzania, aimed at ending the border crisis. The Malawian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation spokesman Mr Quent Kalichero reiterated in an interview in Lilongwe Malawi's government's position, saying that the suggestion of mediators is unacceptable. Malawi claims the entire Niassa lake, except the part belonging to Mozambique, Tanzania requires that it should be divided in half. The Malawi government's position has been communicated to the mediation team made up of former African heads of state that will contribute to a legal decision on the ownership of Lake Niassa. The mediation team is headed by former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano. Kalichero, confirmed the cancellation of the meeting in Maputo, but announced that a new date will be set soon. The proposed sharing of resources of Lake Niassa occurs at a time when there are reports about the existence of oil and natural gas. (RM / Lilongwe)
