PR encourages people to leave risky regions because of dam discharges.

Given the discharges made by some dams in the country, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, has urged the population to evacuate flood-prone areas.

The Head of State, speaking this Thursday in Maputo at a ceremony commemorating the International Day of Disaster Risk, which he directed as advocate for Disaster Risk Reduction and management in Africa, explained that the dam discharges are part of the measures to prevent further damage during the upcoming rainy season.

He cited the Cahora Bassa dams in Tete, Pequenos Libombos, Maputo province, and Massingir, Gaza province.

"We know what will happen in the forthcoming rainy season because of this prevention issue. As a result, the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric plant decided to carry out the discharges, and it is also happening here in Libombos. .We draw attention to the withdrawal of populations from high-risk areas along the Zambezi, Limpopo, and Umbelzi rivers, where there is a risk of flooding.
