Sofala. Due to HCB releases, nearly 1,200 hectares of farmland are inundated in Chemba.

In the district of Chemba, in Sofala, around 1,200 hectares of different crops are submerged due to discharges from the hydroelectric dam of Cahora Bassa.

The situation affects around 3,000 peasant families who own machambas on islands and on the banks of the Zambezi River.

The district administrator of Chemba, Paulo Quembo, said that the waters of the Zambezi reached 2.4 meters this Friday, the alert level.

The secretary of state of Sofala, Stella Pinto Zeca, who is visiting Chemba, appeals to the populations living on the banks of the Zambezi River to take precaution in the face of discharges from the Cahora Bassa dam.

According to forecasts by the National Water Administration of the Center (ARA -CENTRO), the discharges from the Cahora Bassa dam could cause flooding in the districts of Chemba, Caia and Marromeu. (RM)
