Inhambane Governor Inaugurates New Courtrooms, Addresses Violence Against Women and Elderly

Inhambane, Mozambique – President Nyussi inaugurated two new courtrooms in the districts of Panda and Jangamo on Monday, November 26th, as part of the presidential initiative “One District, One Court Building.”

During the inauguration ceremony, the President expressed deep concern over the alarming rates of violence against women, girls, and the elderly in the province. He highlighted the urgency of addressing these issues, particularly as the holiday season approaches.

According to the President, the first half of this year saw a distressing number of violence cases nationwide, with over 4,500 women and 3,000 children among the victims. Inhambane province alone, over 1,000 individuals, primarily women and girls, sought treatment for violence-related injuries.

A particularly disturbing trend in Inhambane is the abuse of elderly individuals, often falsely accused of witchcraft. The President emphasized the importance of protecting the elderly, who are invaluable sources of wisdom and knowledge.

With the inauguration of these new courtrooms, Inhambane province has now completed six of the seven planned court buildings under the presidential initiative. The President expressed hope that these new facilities will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial system, ensuring timely justice and upholding the rule of law.
