Former Beira Municipal Assembly President Brutally Assaulted
Beira, Mozambique
Gilberto Lang, former president of the Beira Municipal Assembly for the MDM party, was brutally assaulted on Saturday night.
According to Lang, he was ambushed around 10 pm while driving home. He heard a loud impact on the rear of his car and cautiously exited the vehicle to investigate. Suddenly, five men confronted him, accusing him of reckless driving.
Lang stated that when he attempted to defend himself, he was threatened with a pistol and forcibly dragged into their vehicle. He shouted for help, but the assailants fired a warning shot into the air to deter any assistance.
Lang explained that he was taken to an unknown location where he was subjected to a severe beating before being abandoned. He was later rescued by people who recognized him.
The incident has been reported to the police. Notably, Lang was recently detained by police during a nurses' protest.
