Maputo, December 27, 2024 - A surge in international tourism has seen visitor numbers to Mozambique's remarkable heritage sites triple in a single year, exceeding 14,000 in 2023. This exciting news comes from the latest annual report by the National Institute of Statistics.
In 2022, 4,652 international travelers explored Mozambique's rich cultural and natural treasures. However, 2023 witnessed a remarkable 200% increase, with over 14,000 foreign visitors captivated by the country's unique offerings.
Top Attractions:
Three iconic sites in the vibrant capital city of Maputo proved particularly popular:
- Maputo Fortress: This historic landmark welcomed 4,054 international visitors, offering a glimpse into Mozambique's fascinating past.
- National Railway Museum of Mozambique: With its impressive collection of locomotives and rolling stock, the museum attracted 4,211 foreign tourists.
- Natural History Museum: Showcasing the country's incredible biodiversity, the museum delighted 3,270 international visitors.
Mozambicans Embrace Their Heritage:
Domestic tourism also experienced significant growth, with nearly double the number of Mozambican citizens exploring their country's heritage sites. While the Maputo Zoo continues to attract large numbers of local visitors (36,218 in 2023), the Natural History Museum of Maputo followed closely with 29,321 visitors.
This remarkable growth in tourism demonstrates the increasing global appeal of Mozambique's unique cultural and natural heritage.
