Tete: Fewer Malaria Deaths Despite High Cases

In the current year, twelve people have lost their lives in Tete province due to malaria, according to official data. These deaths contribute to a total of over 600,000 diagnosed cases in the region.

Alex Bertil, Tete's Provincial Health Director, revealed that there has been a 40% decrease in the number of deaths compared to the same period last year, when twenty deaths were recorded. Despite this reduction, malaria remains a significant concern for the Health sector.

Bertil emphasized the preventive measures in place, stating, "We continue to distribute free mosquito nets to every pregnant woman during prenatal consultations or at the next visit if she didn't receive one initially. We are also administering intermittent preventive treatment with FANSIDAR to all pregnant women from the thirteenth week of pregnancy to prevent malaria."

Over the last five years, Tete's health sector has conducted two campaigns, distributing more than 1.6 million mosquito nets to combat the spread of the disease.
