Elephant Rampage in Mecula: Five Dead, Crops Devastated
In the Mecula district of Niassa, five individuals were killed and eight others sustained serious injuries due to elephant attacks between January and December of last year.
António Joaquim, the district administrator of Mecula, reported that in addition to the fatalities, these elephants also destroyed more than 119 hectares of various crops.
"These animals are escaping from the reserve and impacting the buffer zone, but the Reserve is considering solutions for this problem. It was easier when we had a helicopter for control to scare them off. From the buffer zone inward was more manageable before, but recently, there seem to be difficulties," he explained.
During the current agricultural campaign, the Mecula district has prepared and sown over 5,600 hectares, aiming to produce 11,600 tons of various food crops.
