Mozambique Weather Update: Cooler Temperatures and Heavy Rain Expected

Source: Notícias

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has issued a weather alert for Mozambique, with meteorologist Pedro Mutumane detailing the upcoming changes:

INAM advises that from January to May, the country can expect normal to above-normal temperatures and rainfall. However, starting today, a notable shift is anticipated:

  • Temperatures will slightly decrease from the extreme highs of 39 to 43 degrees Celsius experienced last week, settling between 30 and 33 degrees.
  • Both the northern and southern parts of Mozambique are set to see moderate to heavy rain. This will begin from Monday and is expected to continue until the end of Friday, affecting Maputo, Gaza, the interior of Inhambane, and all northern provinces, with possible extensions to the central regions of Tete, Zambézia, and Manica.

This weather pattern is influenced by:
  • A low pressure system in Southern Africa, which is pushing hot air towards the ocean.
  • A high pressure system in the south of the country.
  • An intertropical convergence zone in the north.
  • Climate change effects, despite the forecast of hot weather later in the season.

INAM stresses the importance of staying informed through regular weather updates and adhering to safety advisories for extreme weather conditions, including intense heat, heavy rainfall, gales, and atmospheric discharges, throughout the 2024-2025 rainy season.
