Mozambique's Macadamia Boom: A Rising Star in the Global Nut Market

Mozambique, a Southern African nation known for its stunning coastline, is quietly cultivating a new source of economic growth: macadamia nuts. The 2023/24 season witnessed a record harvest of 5,000 tonnes, a significant milestone for this emerging industry.

This surge in production has translated into a booming export market. Over 3,735 tonnes of macadamia nuts were shipped abroad, generating over $27 million in revenue. Key export destinations include South Africa, China, and Vietnam, highlighting the growing global demand for this premium nut.

Driving this success is a burgeoning agricultural sector. The number of commercial macadamia producers has skyrocketed to 58, with over 8,000 hectares dedicated to cultivation. Notably, smallholder farmers are increasingly embracing macadamia production, offering a pathway to economic empowerment for rural communities.

Beyond macadamia, Mozambique is also cultivating success in the lychee market. Despite climatic challenges, lychee exports generated over $3 million last season, with major markets in Western Europe. Furthermore, Mozambique is poised to capitalize on a unique market window by exporting lychees to Europe outside of the traditional season.

This agricultural renaissance signals a promising future for Mozambique. By leveraging the global demand for high-value crops like macadamia and lychee, the country is not only boosting its economy but also empowering its farmers and contributing to global food security.
