Senior PODEMOS Member Assassinated in Cabo Delgado

Montepuez, Mozambique - In a chilling continuation of post-election violence, Abdul Lawia, a 34-year-old senior member of the Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS), was shot dead in the Matuto 4 neighborhood of Montepuez district, Cabo Delgado province, on Friday evening. This assassination marks the fifth attack against PODEMOS members since the contentious general elections of October 9, 2024, with four of the incidents resulting in deaths.

Lawia was conversing outside his girlfriend's residence when he was ambushed by assailants dressed in uniforms resembling those worn by the "local force," a militia group known for its efforts against Islamist insurgents in the region. His girlfriend, who witnessed the attack, sustained moderate injuries and is currently under treatment at Montepuez Rural Hospital. She recounted the incident, stating, "Everything happened very quickly. That same evening, my boyfriend was taken to the hospital, but unfortunately there was no medical intervention because he had already died at the scene of the murder."

The attack has been described by Singano Assane, PODEMOS's delegate in Cabo Delgado, as politically motivated. This claim is bolstered by the pattern of recent attacks targeting members of the party, which backed Venâncio Mondlane, the presidential candidate in the last election. PODEMOS has since become the leading opposition party, overtaking Renamo, which had held that position since Mozambique's first multiparty elections in 1994.

The initial assassinations that sparked widespread concern were those of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, both close advisers to Mondlane, killed on October 19, 2024. These murders, alongside Lawia's, have not led to any arrests, raising serious questions about the effectiveness and impartiality of local law enforcement in dealing with politically motivated violence.

The use of uniforms by the assailants could suggest either rogue elements within security forces or an attempt to frame these attacks as part of the broader conflict against Islamist militants in Cabo Delgado.
